THE BRIEF

“Feeling lost” is a common experience at Wynyard Station. To uncover the root causes, extensive on-site research and analysis were conducted, including user observation, diagramming, and reporting. Based on the findings, three design concepts were explored to address the identified obstacles, with one concept being refined into a comprehensive Wayfinding System. The final solution aimed to improve navigation, accessibility, and user experience within the space.

The concept

Australia's deep connection to the sea is a fundamental aspect of its culture and has inspired my 'water' concept, helping me to create a wayfinding system that not only effortlessly guides visitors, but also celebrates heritage. These signs stand out, enhancing the urban landscape without distracting from Sydney’s architecture.

Design Solution

The new sign system, crafted from recycled rusted metal, reflects the nature of a city's constant change through its ever-changing patina. It addresses key issues with improved visibility through internal illumination, consistent sizing for optimal visibility and readability, and a clearer map layout to reduce confusion about direction. Strategically positioned information signs at entrances enhance usability, while the recurring wave pattern, inspired by ocean movement, adds depth and cohesion to the design.

At night

One major issue with the old bust stand signs was the limited visibility caused by the lack of lighting. In some cases, so bad, that they were practically invisible. The new signage solution will be internally illuminated, which dramatically increases their visibility and effectiveness.
